I found this leaf on a walk in the fall and its shape immediately stood out to me as a roof that would provide shelter and safety. As this painting progressed the composition took on more of a church like quality where the top of the leaf and stem seemed to rise up like a steeple. The interveinal areas of the leaf let light shine through like stained glass windows, letting the diffused orange light fall softly on the female Cardinal taking refuge inside.
